Staying in charge of your electricity use at home

What does this mean for using appliances?

This hairdryer, used at full power, uses 2000 Watts (W) of electricity

1,000 Watts (W)  = 1 kilowatt (kW) ……….  So 2000 Watts (W)  = 2 kilowatts (kW)

We pay for the electricity we use in our homes in kilowatt hours (kWh) – the cost of using 1 kilowatt of electricity for 1 hour

The more kilowatts we use in an hour, the more kiloWatt hours we’ll have to pay for

Using our 2kW hairdryer for 1 hour will use 2 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity

Using our 2kW hairdryer for 2 hours will use 4 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity
