Course aim

The Introduction to Domestic Energy Efficiency webinar is designed to provide a basic introduction to domestic energy efficiency for frontline staff who are providing householders with energy efficiency advice.  The course aims to raise frontline staff awareness of how householders can use their energy more efficiently and reduce possible waste while still maintaining a warm and comfortable home.

Course objectives

During this course, we will:

  • Explain how energy is used in the home
  • Identify common heating systems and appliances
  • Explore the use of basic heating controls
  • Discuss the different ways heat is lost in the home and how insulation measures can help prevent this
  • Identify tips to reduce electricity consumption and the cost of heating water
  • Explore different sources of assistance and advice
Course content
  • Explain basic space heating appliances
  • Explanation of some basic space heating and hot water controls including room thermostats, TRVs, storage heaters and programmers
  • Tips for using energy more efficiently in relation to heating, hot water, lighting and appliances
  • Examine heat loss in the home and insulation
  • Explain some of the help and assistance available, including the Warm Home Discount Scheme, Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment, Priority Service Register and the Affordable Warmth Obligation.
