National Energy Action’s second annual event in the city
On Saturday 15 February, around 40 people took part in National Energy Action’s second annual Walk for Warmth event in Newcastle. National Energy Action, the national fuel poverty charity, which is headquartered in Newcastle, held the community-based walk to help raise vital funds and awareness to support households experiencing fuel poverty across the UK.
Representatives from the charity were joined by people of all ages for the family-friendly event, as well as organisations including Northern Gas Networks and 0800 Repair to take on the 5km route.
Despite the chilly weather, participants braved the cold and walked from the iconic Grey’s Monument to Exhibition Park, round to Leazes Park, before ending at St. James Park. The group then warmed up at the Home Group office on Strawberry Lane with baked goods kindly supplied by Greggs, Dicksons and Milligans.
National Energy Action Fundraising Manager Jess Irwin said, ‘Thanks so much to everyone who came along and took part in the Walk for Warmth, despite the cold weather! There are currently 6.1 million UK households in fuel poverty, so it was fantastic to see so many people come together to raise awareness and life-changing funds to support some of the most vulnerable people to stay warm at home.’
