Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert has announced he will donate £100,000 to help National Energy Action (NEA) increase its support to the most vulnerable as the Energy Crisis intensifies.
He made the announcement in a tweet on Tuesday 11th January, saying “Announcement. I’m funding @NEA_UKCharity £100,000 to set up web chat advice for vulnerable people to free up its helplines by 1 Apr when, UNLESS GOVT INTERVENES energy bills rise 51% Now pls Govt provide more help for ’em to advise on. We can’t let people choose freeze or starve!”
Our CEO Adam Scorer replied: “The prospects are pretty bleak for millions. Trusted and reliable info and advice will be needed more than ever. This will help us respond quickly to help people access whatever support is available. The man’s a star.”
Our page on the Energy Crisis shows the support is much needed. Bills are set to rocket in April. Alongside similar unprecedented increases in Northern Ireland, the GB wide hike will be a disaster for those who were already struggling to pay their bills and could leave over 6 million households in fuel poverty across the UK. Just a few months ago, at the start of October 2021, 4 million households in the UK were in fuel poverty – struggling to afford to keep their homes warm and safe. Then, the GB wide price cap was raised in October. Our estimates showed that another half a million households were then classed as fuel poor. If the rise is as predicted then a further 1.5 million UK households could be in fuel poverty – an increase of 50% in six months.
Once the project has launched we will update here and on our social media channels @NEA_UKCharity on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
