The energy regulator Ofgem has today published its final proposals for its price control for the next five years for gas transmission, electricity transmission, gas distribution and the electricity system operator in Great Britain. The price control allows energy networks to make billions of pounds of investments to deliver a clean and reliable energy system, paid for through energy consumers’ bills.
Peter Smith, Director of Policy and Research at fuel poverty charity NEA comments:
“Ofgem‘s task is by no means easy. During a pandemic when household incomes are falling and energy debt is growing, they have tried to strike a balance between securing a good deal for energy customers, whilst encouraging sufficient investment in our energy networks to reach net zero. These decisions also have a massive impact on how energy networks can support their most vulnerable customers to keep safe and warm in their homes. We are pleased Ofgem has responded to our initial concerns and has increased the level of support for companies to address their most vulnerable customers’ needs. We hope energy networks now have the clarity they need to provide consistent advice and support for vulnerable households and can hit the ground running in time for April”.

- NEA’s response to the draft determinations called on Ofgem to ensure there is sufficient headroom within relevant allowances to enable the networks to continue to support their most vulnerable customers. NEA also urged Ofgem to set out a clear timeframe for introducing a new vulnerability licence conditions, in advance of April 2021.
