Decarbonising Homes: Technologies, Impacts and Solutions (CQ11527 Level 4 Award)
There are so many different ways householders can get involved in the green transition. This course provides a practical understanding of a range of low carbon and renewable technologies, their impacts, and how they can help people living in fuel poverty.
The content combines insight from National Energy Action’s own extensive experiences of trialling the use of innovative technologies in low-income and vulnerable households, with data from other recent prominent studies.
To achieve the UK’s target of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 it will be essential to transform our existing housing stock, with insulation, low carbon heating, and renewable energy generation. This course will look at these new technologies to provide a practical understanding of their impacts and how they can help people living in fuel poverty.
Technologies such as heat pumps and solar PV have the potential to make energy more accessible and affordable for millions of low-income and vulnerable households, but only if used appropriately and individuals are effectively engaged and supported throughout the transition.
Housing providers, installers and advice agencies will have a key role in supporting these individuals on their low-carbon journey. To do this successfully they need to be equipped with sufficient understanding of the breadth of technologies available and how those technologies perform in different settings. They also need to understand how to support individuals with optimising the technology, which may include changes in behaviour.
Prerequisite
This course is delivered through e-learning, so learners will need basic computer skills to access the course and navigate the slides.
At level 4, the assessment is also on-line and will require learners to show the ability to evaluate information, carry out analysis of data and provide answers in a short essay format.
It is expected that learners for this course will already have a good understanding of general domestic energy efficiency issues and knowledge of heating systems, measuring consumption and fuel bills etc. Ideally, learners will already have passed the Level 3 Energy Awareness qualification.
About the course
This new course has been developed to provide a practical understanding of a range of low carbon and renewable technologies, their impacts, and how they can help people living in fuel poverty
The content combines insight from NEA’s own extensive experiences of trialling the use of innovative technologies in low-income and vulnerable households, with data from other recent prominent studies.
It will discuss the benefits of these technologies and use case studies from NEA’s innovation trials to illustrate examples of resident satisfaction, the advantages of each technology but also potential issues and considerations.
Who is it for?
The insights and knowledge gained from our training will be relevant to anyone who may be engaging with or supporting low income and vulnerable consumers on low carbon or renewable heat and power, including housing providers, advice agencies and installers.

- Overview of the traditional heating systems and boilers

The Role of Heat Pumps
- Sources of funding

The Role of Electric Heating
- Single rate and time of use electricity tariffs
- Traditional and modern storage heaters
- On peak electric radiators, boilers and Infra-Red heaters

The Role of Insulation
- Sources of funding
- Methods of insulation and options for hard-to-treat areas

- Quantifying heat transfer

The Role of Solar Technologies and Energy Storage
- Solar PV, estimating generation and issues with installations
- Domestic battery storage, the benefits and issues which can occur

The Role of Heat Networks and Biomass
- Biomass room heaters, pellet, log and wood chip boilers
- Combined Heat and Power (CHP)

Appropriate Electricity Tariffs for New Technologies
- Types of meter, methods of payment and types of tariffs

How will the COURSE work?
This course is available via e-learning. The complete course consists of 8 subject modules plus a short introduction module.
Learners can choose to complete the full course or select individual modules. The introduction module is mandatory and automatically included at the beginning of each subject.
Once booked learners will have access to the e-learning for four weeks per module (or six weeks per module if also undertaking the assessment). If you are booking multiple modules this will be applied consecutively i.e. 1 module = four weeks, 2 modules = eight weeks and so on.
E-learning is self-led so learners can study as and when they wish however support is also available from NEA’s expert tutors upon request.
The suggested study time for each module is outlined above under the ‘course content’ section however please remember that this is just a guide.
How will the ASSESSMENT work?
Learners will have the opportunity to complete an assessment for each module (there is no assessment for the introduction). Upon completion of all 8 modules and assessments the learner will achieve a NCFE Level 4 qualification.
Certificates of module credit will also be available for learners that wish to complete individual modules rather than the full course.
Assessments are open book format and will be shared with learners as an online form. There are no set ‘exam’ dates, learners complete the assessment in their own time then submit their answers once ready.
Suggested study time for each assessment is 2 to 3 hours.
This qualification has been accredited as a Customised Qualification and we have benchmarked the qualification’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria at Level 4 to allow you to demonstrate the difficulty and depth of study.
NCFE is an awarding organisation recognised by the qualification regulators for England (Ofqual), Wales (Qualifications Wales) and Northern Ireland (CCEA Regulation). This is an unregulated qualification and is not a nationally recognised qualification
Additional information
This course is intended to give delegates a very practical understanding of a range of different technologies including when they might be most effective in supporting fuel poor households and considerations to mitigate against potential operational issues. The knowledge gained will equip delegates with relevant facts to aid with decision making and support effective customer engagement and advice.
The course is not designed to be a technical skills course and will not make delegates experts on individual technologies.

This course is split into modules giving learners the choice to complete the full course or just the modules that are relevant to them.
There is no charge for the introduction, just the 8 subject modules.
