Session 3 | Bridging the gap: Priorities for urgent progress
Choice of three breakout sessions. All three sessions will be recorded and made available to watch after conference.
BREAKOUT A – Extending our reach: Finding the right households for priority assistance
Resources from Government and business are tight, and universal support is expensive, as confirmed during the depths of the energy crisis. How we target support has become an important element of creating solutions for fuel poverty. This session will focus on how best to reach fuel poor households, how we can find them using data, and work is being progressed to this end, both in Government and in business
- Ben Pledger, Deputy Director for Energy Affordability, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
- Kate Roberts, Customer Success Director, Switchee
- Matt James, Head of Innovation and Policy, Smart DCC
BREAKOUT B – Rented sector: Opportunities to take the lead
Rented accommodation presents a significant issue in efforts to end fuel poverty. Renters lack the agency to make changes to their homes, and their landlords do not always have the resources, or incentive to do so themselves. This session explores the perspectives of different actors as we strive to improve the energy efficiency of rented accommodation, including the promised introduction of tighter Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for all rented accommodation.
- Maya Fitchett, Policy Analyst, National Energy Action
- Parissa Zand, Research and Policy Manager, Generation Rent
- Dr Matthew Scott, Policy and Practice Officer, Chartered Institute of Housing
- Miles Lewis, Director of Sustainability, Clarion Housing Group
BREAKOUT C – Gaps in advice and crisis support: People’s experiences of winter
As we enter the winter months, many vulnerable people face heightened challenges navigating the complexities of crisis support and access to essential advice. This session aims to identify the gaps in support, why some people struggle to access support and what more can be done.

This session will look at the current barriers to delivery, how initiatives to co-ordinate activity at national and local levels are helping to overcome those barriers, and how we make sure that there is meaningful engagement with communities and householders throughout the process.
