Advent Calendar Day 6: Ibrahim and Hafsa’s story
Ibrahim* was referred to National Energy Action by his Macmillan Cancer Support team while receiving care during treatment for cancer.
He lived with his wife Hafsa* and their five children aged between 4 and 16-years-old. As Ibrahim was seriously ill and unable to work, the family were struggling financially. At the start of winter, it was becoming increasingly important to keep their home warm enough for a family with a very poorly parent and young children. A decreased family income and rising fuel costs meant the family had developed some energy debt in their efforts to maintain a safe, warm home during this difficult time.
Sadly, Ibrahim passed away before his first appointment with our adviser. However, we felt it was critical at this devastating time for the family to receive our support, so we kept the family case open and let Hafsa know that we’d be here for her whenever she was ready.
A few weeks later Hafsa spoke with our adviser, who was able to offer the family £700 towards their energy bill through our Warm Home Prescription Service.
Since Ibrahim’s passing, Hafsa had been incredibly stressed and worried about supporting her family. She ‘couldn’t believe’ the amount she received and was ‘very grateful’.
We were pleased that we could offer some relief to an imaginably sad situation, when Hafsa needed time to mourn her husband and look after her grieving children without the added worry of keeping their home safe and warm.
The help we provide is only possible because of the incredible support we receive. Your generosity can change lives and mean more people like Hafsa can feel warm, safe and secure in their home this winter and beyond.
Support Operation Warmth and help spread warmth and hope this Christmas.
