Day 1 Allison's story

Advent Calendar Day 1: Allison’s story

Allison* was going through an unimaginable time when she was put in touch with us. She was a single parent to four children, one of whom – a six-year-old – was receiving end-of-life care at home.

The family had been moved to a local authority rented property that had been adapted to fully support quality end-of-life care.

With a need for oxygen concentrators, a feed pump, an additional fridge for medication, two hoists and a lift to keep her child comfortable, Allison faced high electricity bills. However, Allison hadn’t been provided with meter keys to access the meters in the new property, so she was unable to check usage; leaving her with the additional worry about accruing debt at an already unbelievably difficult time.

After Allison was referred to National Energy Action by a health care professional, we wanted to do everything we could to make sure Allison and her family could feel warm and safe at home. Our adviser provided Allison with meter keys so she could begin to check her meter readings and liaised with Allison’s energy supplier to ensure they were aware of the family’s situation and that she received additional support. Her supplier then set up an affordable monthly direct debit, registered Allison on the Priority Services Register, and provided a replacement cooker to help Allison prepare hot meals for the family.

Our adviser also applied for a £700 support payment through our Warm Home Prescription scheme to reduce some of the immediate financial burden.

Supporting Allison meant we were able to alleviate the financial stress of affording her energy bills, so she could focus on caring for her children in a home that was warm and safe.

The help we provide is only possible because of the incredible support we receive. Your generosity can change lives and mean more people like Allison and her family can feel warm, safe and secure in their home this winter and beyond.

Support Operation Warmth and help spread warmth and hope this Christmas.
