Day 16 Jacob's story

Advent Calendar Day 16: Jacob’s story

When Jacob*, moved into a socially rented property several years ago, he inherited the previous tenants’ debt on his gas meter. While new tenants are not responsible for paying previous tenants’ energy debts, Jacob hadn’t realised this at the time. Unable to pay off this debt, his gas was capped and Jacob had solely used electricity since 2021. This left him with no central heating or hot water on tap for more than three years.

Jacob was also living with cancer and had visual impairments, making him particularly vulnerable and in desperate need of a warm and safe home. He had become reliant on electric heaters and having to boil hot water for bathing and so was also facing higher than average electricity bills.

Once in touch with National Energy Action, our adviser spoke to his supplier on his behalf to put in place a realistic gas payment plan going forward, clear the inherited debt from the previous tenant and reinstate his gas supply.

We were able to give Jacob some energy vouchers, and a Winter Warmth Support Pack filled with items to help keep him warmer. Our adviser also added him to his energy supplier’s Priority Services Register.

This was a life-changing result for Jacob who had been suffering in a cold home for years as well as dealing with cancer. We are so pleased we could support him so he no longer had to struggle without heating or water.

The help we provide is only possible because of the incredible support we receive. Your generosity can change lives and mean more people like Jacob can feel warm, safe and secure in their home this winter and beyond.

Support Operation Warmth and help spread warmth and hope this Christmas.
